\n

4\u00a0Listen to the word of the\u00a0Lord, people of Jacob\u2014all you families of Israel!<\/p>\n

\u00a05\u00a0This is what the\u00a0Lord\u00a0says:
\n\u201cWhat did your ancestors find wrong with me\u00a0that led them to stray so far from me?<\/p>\n

\n

They worshiped worthless idols,
\nonly to become worthless themselves.
\n6\u00a0They did not ask, \u2018Where is the\u00a0Lord
\nwho brought us safely out of Egypt
\nand led us through the barren wilderness\u2014
\na land of deserts and pits,
\na land of drought and death,
\nwhere no one lives or even travels?\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

7\u00a0\u201cAnd when I brought you into a fruitful land
\nto enjoy its bounty and goodness,
\nyou defiled my land and
\ncorrupted the possession I had promised you.
\n8\u00a0The priests did not ask,
\n\u2018Where is the\u00a0Lord?\u2019
\nThose who taught my word ignored me,
\nthe rulers turned against me,
\nand the prophets spoke in the name of Baal,
\nwasting their time on worthless idols.
\n9\u00a0Therefore, I will bring my case against you,\u201d
\nsays the\u00a0Lord.
\n\u201cI will even bring charges against your children\u2019s children
\nin the years to come.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

10\u00a0\u201cGo west and look in the land of Cyprus;
\ngo east and search through the land of Kedar.
\nHas anyone ever heard of anything
\nas strange as this?
\n11\u00a0Has any nation ever traded its gods for new ones,
\neven though they are not gods at all?
\nYet my people have exchanged their glorious God
\nfor worthless idols!
\n12\u00a0The heavens are shocked at such a thing
\nand shrink back in horror and dismay,\u201d
\nsays the\u00a0Lord.
\n13\u00a0\u201cFor my people have done two evil things:
\nThey have abandoned me\u2014
\nthe fountain of living water.
\nAnd they have dug for themselves cracked cisterns
\nthat can hold no water at all!<\/p>\n
