It was about noon.<\/p>\n<p>7\u00a0A Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Give me a drink.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>8\u00a0(His disciples had gone to the city to buy food.)<\/p>\n<p>9\u00a0The Samaritan woman said to him, \u201cHow is it that you, a Jew, ask a drink of me, a woman of Samaria?\u201d (Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans.)<\/p>\n<p>10\u00a0Jesus answered her, \u201cIf you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, \u2018Give me a drink,\u2019 you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>11\u00a0The woman said to him, \u201cSir, you have no bucket, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water?<\/p>\n<p>12\u00a0Are you greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us the well, and with his sons and his flocks drank from it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>13\u00a0Jesus said to her, \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,<\/span><\/p>\n<p>14\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">but those who drink of the water that I will give them will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>15\u00a0The woman said to him, \u201cSir, give me this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>16\u00a0Jesus said to her, \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Go, call your husband, and come back.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>17\u00a0The woman answered him, \u201cI have no husband.\u201d Jesus said to her, \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">You are right in saying, \u2018I have no husband\u2019;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>18\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband. What you have said is true!<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>19\u00a0The woman said to him, \u201cSir, I see that you are a prophet.<\/p>\n<p>20\u00a0Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you\u00a0say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>21\u00a0Jesus said to her, \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>22\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>23\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>24\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>25\u00a0The woman said to him, \u201cI know that Messiah is coming\u201d (who is called Christ). \u201cWhen he comes, he will proclaim all things to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>26\u00a0Jesus said to her, \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I am he,\u00a0the one who is speaking to you.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>27\u00a0Just then his disciples came. They were astonished that he was speaking with a woman, but no one said, \u201cWhat do you want?\u201d or, \u201cWhy are you speaking with her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>28\u00a0Then the woman left her water jar and went back to the city. She said to the people,<\/p>\n<p>29\u00a0\u201cCome and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! He cannot be the Messiah,\u00a0can he?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>30\u00a0They left the city and were on their way to him.<\/p>\n<p>31\u00a0Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, \u201cRabbi, eat something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>32\u00a0But he said to them, \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I have food to eat that you do not know about.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>33\u00a0So the disciples said to one another, \u201cSurely no one has brought him something to eat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>34\u00a0Jesus said to them, \u201c<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to complete his work.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>35\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Do you not say, \u2018Four months more, then comes the harvest\u2019? But I tell you, look around you, and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>36\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The reaper is already receiving\u00a0wages and is gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>37\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">For here the saying holds true, \u2018One sows and another reaps.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p>38\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.<\/span>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>39\u00a0Many Samaritans from that city believed in him because of the woman\u2019s testimony, \u201cHe told me everything I have ever done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>40\u00a0So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them; and he stayed there two days.<\/p>\n<p>41\u00a0And many more believed because of his word.<\/p>\n<p>42\u00a0They said to the woman, \u201cIt is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is truly the Savior of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; John 4:5-42(NRSV) 5\u00a0So he came to a Samaritan city called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6\u00a0Jacob\u2019s well was there, and Jesus, tired out by his journey, was sitting by the well.
